2008 Desert Classic Futurity RG3
This is the First Leg of the Arizona Triple Crown
and NEW this year the first leg of the $100,000 Bonus

April 13, was “Fiesta Sunday” at turf Paradise… The AQRA was lucky enough to get to run the 2008 Desert Classic Futurity trials on this day.The AQRA partnered with coop advertising in the Hispanic newspaper and radio stations.Posters were posted in business around the state.By the 12:30 post for the first race the crowd had arrived. There were food specials, Mariachi bands, rides and games for the children and the best card of two year old quarter horses racing to date this year.Six trials of 8 and 9 horse fields attracted the wagerer. The handle was the largest for a “Fiesta Sunday” this season at Turf Paradise. This is a fairly new concept by the racing community to reach out to he Hispanic owners, trainers and betting public.IT WORKED…………….

The wind was a factor as it did not know which way to blow.
At first the two year olds were scared and a bit fractious.

The first trial had a field of nine and they broke without incident. Signedbyme a sorrel filly by Check Him Out and out of Signature By Request broke about third but proved the best by ½ length in a time of 16.22. This would prove to be the slowest heat of the day. The filly is owned by Clint Wilharm, Larry Brasher and Wayne Brasher. A Father, Son and Grandson combination. Wayne is also the trainer. Mark Villa came in from New Mexico to ride for the Brasher barn today.

The second trial Tell Someone a chestnut filly by Hawkinson out of Chicks Tell broke on top and improved her position to win by a length and one half in a time of 15:85.The filly is owned by Martha Wells and her trainer is Matt Fales. This is a very familiar combination. Jeff Jermain was the jockey today.

The third trial, Braytini a sorrel filly by Corona Cocktail and out of Braydina, broke from the five hole and prevailed over the front-runners Cash and More Cash (a black filly by Dash To First Place and out of Shesa Goin Jessie, owned and trained by Wayne Brasher) and Slick Chick Countess ( a chestnut filly by Count Corona by Winning for CC owned by Bruce Coughenower and trained by Matt Fales) by one half length. This filly is owned by Cesar Dabdoub and trained by Raul Hernandez, a very dynamic duo, with Elias Gutierrez, a popular Arizona Quarter Horse rider,in the irons. The time was 15:90.

The fourth trial A Regal Star a chestnut filly by A Regal Choice out of Ra Noble battled for the lead against Mayhem Mae,( a brown filly by Throwin A fit, owned by Ralph and Carrie Fales and trained by Matt Fales),to win by a nose in the, what turned out to be, fastest heat of the day. A Regal Star is owned by Salvadore Pimenta, and trained by Felix Gonzalez ridden by Turf Paradise regular, Miguel Hernandez. The time was 15.78.

The fifth trial... Dales Final Fashion, a sorrel filly by Special Effort and out of Final Fashion broke in a bit but with confident handling of Mark Villa prevailed by three quarters of a length over Golden Gol (a sorrel gelding by Gol out of Cash For Cucu owned by James Mitchum and trained by Raul Hernandez)in a time of 15.87. This filly is owned by Dale D Smith and trained by Wayne Brasher, Mark Villa was in the irons.

The sixth and final trial today was won by Rock N Tres Seis a bay gelding by Tres Seis out of NN Rock N Effort in a time of 15.82. Eyesa Effort ( a sorrel gelding by Special Effort and out of BF Fantastic Dream owned by Benito Guillen Jr. and trained by Ramon Fontes, Jr. ) broke on top but Rock N Tres Seis owned by Larry Stark and Steve Pierce of Prescott Valley, after a clean break proved best. The gelding is trained by Raul Hernandez and Vince Guerra long time leading jockey at Turf Paradise, was the rider.

The 2008 Desert Classic Futurity Consolation was run May 2 at Turf Paradise. The winner was “ Sonora Cartel” owned by Salvador Pimienta and trained by Armando Castellanos ridden by Miguel Hernandez.

Sonora Cartel is a brown filly by Tres Seis and out of Corona Blurr. Each year Turf Paradise sponsors a race for the horses who did not qualify to run in the finals of this prestigious race.Tho not really a consolation it does give ten more great horses a place to run for a little extra money. We thank management for this opportunity and look forward to the future of this race at Turf Paradise.
This year both the Futurity and Consolation winners were by Tres Seis. I don’t ever recall that the finals and consolation were won by the same stallion. This is a first….Congratulations to JEH Ranch and Marilyn and Jim Helzer for their donation of this fine stallion to the AQRA Stallion Service Auction and the Desert Classic program. Both winners are owned by Arizona residents, in fact never has the finals of this race been won by out of state owners. With shipped semen, our Arizona breeders can breedto any stallion they wish and still have an Arizona Bred horse. As the winner of the 2008 Desert Classic Futurity, Rock N Tres Seis can run for the $100,000 bonus. The second race he would have to win is the Yavapai Downs Open QH Futurity and the Turf Paradise Open QH Futurity.Good Luck to these Arizona connections.
The Desert Classic is the fist leg of the Arizona Triple Crown, any horse running in the finals receives points but only horses that are by Arizona Stallions will be able to run in the ASOA Futurity which is the second leg and stallions nominated to the AQRA Stallion Futurity which is the third leg. Here are the horses and points that are eligible to run for the second and third legs of the Arizona Triple Crown.
